Workshop on Cartographic and GIS Education in the AI Era

The ICA Commission on Education and Training and the ICA Working Group on the Cartographic Body of Knowledge are organizing a Workshop on Cartographic and GIS Education in the AI Era. It is scheduled from 9:00 AM to 12:00 AM on September 11th, 2026 (UTC-5) , the last day of the CAGIS 2026, https://cartogis.org/conferences/cagis2026/. The workshop will be held at the Busch Student Center on the campus of St. Louis University, Missouri, USA.

This workshop invites cartography and GIS experts and educators to share their insights and latest practices in education, covering topics including but not limited to:

  • Perspective and reflections on future cartography and GIS education with AI, from both educator and learner viewpoints
  • Curriculum design and programs development in cartographic education in AI era
  • Developing AI enabled online educational resources for teaching cartography
  • Best practices and experiences in teaching map making, map use and analysis using AI technologies
  • Integrating cartography in geography education and geo-related disciplines using AI tools
  • Open source tools and datasets for cartographic education

The workshop will include invited talks, expert presentations and interactive discussions in a hybrid format.

You are warmly invited to join and submit an extended abstract using the ICA template. Please send your abstract to the organizers (Terje Midtbø, terje.midtbo@ntnu.no, and Tao Wang, wangt@cnu.edu.cn) before July 30th, 2026. Notification of acceptance will be made before 15th August, 2026.
