Workshop on Cartographic and GIS Education: Challenges and Opportunities in the Era of AI

The ICA Commission on Education and Training and the ICA Working Group on the Cartographic Body of Knowledge are organizing the Workshop on Cartographic and GIS Education: Challenges and Opportunities in the Era of AI in Nanjing, China, November 11th, 2026 (UTC/GMT +8).

The contents and pedagogies for cartographic and GIS education are undergoing profound shift with booming artificial intelligence and wide emerging applications. At this critical moment, this workshop invites researchers and educators across the field to share their forward looking insights and latest practices in education. The suggested topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Perspectives and reflections on the future of cartographic and GIS education, from both educator and learner viewpoints
  • Best practices and experiences in teaching map making, map use and geospatial analysis with AI technologies
  • Capacity building of next generation cartographers and GIS professionals to meet industry demands
  • Developing AI enabled education resources for teaching cartography and GIS courses
  • Curriculum design and programs development in cartographic education in AI era
  • Integrating cartography into geography and geospatial education using AI tools
  • Open-source software for cartographic and GIS teaching scenarios

The workshop will include invited talks, expert presentations and open interactive discussions in a hybrid format.
